MoveOn.org Political Action Executive Director Ilya Sheyman had the following statement in response to news that Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) will oppose the nuclear deal with Iran and will try to put the nation on the path to war:
“Senator Cardin’s deeply troubling decision to oppose the historic diplomatic agreement with Iran amounts to support for another war. Senator Cardin’s position is far out of sync with the views of both the Democratic Party base as well as the majority of Americans, who support a diplomacy-first approach. The 123,000 MoveOn members in Maryland will work to hold Senator Cardin accountable.
“Nationwide, hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members have mobilized to ensure the historic deal with Iran won’t be sabotaged by Congress, with thousands of members turning out in force throughout August recess—showing up at town halls, contacting their representatives, and holding hundreds of demonstrations to ensure we don’t get bogged down in another costly war of choice in the Middle East.
“Additionally, more than 185,000 MoveOn members have pledged to withhold $43 million in donations from any Democrat who successfully undermines the president’s diplomacy with Iran, as well as any party committees supporting them.
“MoveOn members continue to urge every undecided Democrat to stand for diplomacy and are doubling down on organizing work in the final days of this debate. Every day, MoveOn members are calling congressional offices, signing petitions, and taking other actions. MoveOn is also in the midst of a six-figure, highly targeted online ad buy in key states and districts as well as in Washington, D.C. And next week, on Sept. 10, MoveOn members and allies nationwide will hold candlelight vigils in support of the deal, including one in Baltimore urging Senator Cardin to reconsider his position and thanking Senator Barbara Mikulski for supporting diplomacy.”
